Every month we interview a different member of the Polar team and attempt to uncover what it means to be part of an award-winning design agency. Asking questions about career, aspirations and interests, we want to find out who the people are that make up this vibrant, energetic team.
For this month interview, we’re talking to Polar’s newest member, Colin, who has just taken on the role as head of administration here at the Polar Studio. Colin is the lifeblood of Polar and an amazing addition to the team. He is also father to Polar’s Creative Director and an avid London Wasps fan.
Hello Colin! Can you tell us a little bit about your role at Polar?
Hello! I am responsible for all the office back up duties, such as accounting, research of potential clients and mail shots. I’m essentially the person who keeps things ticking by making sure that all the boring stuff is remembered.
What is the best thing about working at Polar?
Working with our four-legged friend Bear, of course! No, but seriously, it’s the opportunity to assist with the growth of this incredible business… but Bear is fun as well.
What do you consider your greatest career achievement (so far)?
Surviving 40 years in the insurance industry and leading a backup group of 24 people in what was probably the largest London reinsurance brokerage house at the time.
Who are your favourite clients to work for?
I haven’t got my hands dirty at Polar yet, so I cannot comment.
Do you have a favourite quote you can tell us?
“Belt and braces” comes to mind. Always check your work and check again before finalising – you don’t always see the most obvious mistakes the first time around.
What advice would you give to someone starting out in their career?
Learn from the bottom up. If you don’t know the most junior tasks, you can never appreciate the work involved.
What is your favourite film of all time?
Layer cake, for sure.
Thank you, Colin. It was great talking to you. Best of luck in the new position.
